우리가 건축주를 처음 만났을 때 이들은 새로운 집을 설계하는 것에 대한 설렘과 기대감보다는, 오히려 염증을 느끼고 있는 상태였다. 오래된 구옥을 매입한 지는 약 1년 반, 부푼 마음을 안고 직접 디자인을 해 공사까지 진행했지만 진척이 없는 채로 1년이 다 되어가는 상황이었다. 추적이게 비가 오는 날, 우리가 처음으로 마주한 현장은 수직수평이라곤 맞지 않는, 기준도 없이 목상(木狀)이 마구잡이로 세워져 있는 처참한 모습이었다. 예정되어 있던 금액의 상당 부분을 이미 소비했고 공간의 구획 또한 이미 크게 정해져 있는 상황. 완성만 되면 좋겠다는 건축주의 바램을 넘어서 초기의 설렘을 되찾을 수 있는, 건축주와 닮아 있는 공간을 기획하는 것에 초점을 맞추고자 했다.

Upon our initial encounter with the homeowners, they were caught in a state of apprehension, rather than the anticipated exhilaration typically associated with designing their new house. A span of eighteen months had lapsed since their acquisition of the aged property. Filled with high hopes, they had plunged headfirst into the realms of design and construction, only to find themselves mired in stagnation as a year neared its conclusion. During a site visit on an exceptionally rainy day, we were confronted with a disconcerting spectacle: timber beams erected haphazardly, devoid of any semblance of vertical or horizontal alignment. A considerable segment of their budget had been depleted, and the partitioning of the space had largely been determined. Surpassing the homeowners‘ modest aspiration for project completion, our focal point was the creation of a living space that could rekindle their initial excitement and encapsulate their unique personalities.

평범하게 산다는 것은 무엇일까? 3-40대가 꿈꾸는 ‘내 집 마련’ 이라는 꿈은 지극히 상식적이고 평범한 바램이지만, 현실은 은행이나 부모의 도움 없이는 전세를 구하기도 힘든 지경이 되었다. 아파트보다는 오래된 구옥을 매입해 리모델링 하는 것이 현실적이고 경제적일 듯 하나, 전문가가 아닌 이상 오래된 구옥을 고칠 결심을 하기도 아파트의 편리함을 포기하기도 쉽지 않을 것이다. 설령 도전했다고 하더라도 이들과 같은 문제점을 당면하는 것도 피할 수 없는 수순이라 생각되었다.

What, indeed, does it signify to live an 'ordinary' life? The pursuit of homeownership, an aspiration harbored by individuals in their 30s and 40s, is an inherently commonplace desire, yet contemporary realities have rendered it challenging to secure a rental property without recourse to banking facilities or parental assistance. The act of procuring an older house and undertaking renovation work may appear to be a practical and economical alternative to purchasing an apartment, but for the non-professional, the decision to refurbish an aged property is no easy feat, nor is relinquishing the conveniences of an apartment affords. Even those bold enough to rise to the challenge would inevitably face predicaments similar to the homeowners.

‘normal house’, 평범한 일상을 고담(枯淡)히 담아낼 수 있는 집을 그리기로 했다.

그들의 일상과 라이프 스타일에 대한 이야기를 들으며 평범하지만 다정하고 아기자기한 삶을 사는 부부라 생각했다. 일러스트레이터인 아내분의 작가 활동명에 대한 설명이 인상적이었다. 흔한 김씨 성에 어딜 가든 한 명 쯤은 만날 흔한 이름이라 ‘흔흔’이라 활동명을 정했다고 했다. 평범한 일상과 기분, 소소한 것들을 특별하게 여기고 기록하는 그들을 보며, 우리는 이 곳을 꾸밈 없지만 담담하고 다정하게 일상을 담아낼 수 있는 곳이 되도록 계획하고자 했다.

We resolved to envision a 'normal house', a dwelling capable of elegantly capturing the simplicity of everyday life. As we absorbed the stories of the couple's lifestyle and daily routines, we perceived them as an affectionate pair living an ordinary yet endearing existence. The wife, an illustrator, provided a captivating explanation of her chosen pseudonym. Given her ubiquitous surname, 'Kim', she had selected 'HeunHeun' – a word signifying 'common' – as her pen name. In observing the couple's propensity to cherish and document the nuances of their daily life and emotions, we aspired to craft a living space devoid of artificiality yet capable of encapsulating their daily existence in a manner that is both warm and unpretentious.

normal house가 위치한 미아동 주택 골목은 오래된 구옥들이 비좁게 붙어 있는 곳이었다. 집들은 각자의 경계가 없이 옆집과 지붕과 통로를 나누어 쓰는 곳이었고, 기울어진 전봇대와 늘어진 전깃줄이 골목을 따라 휘감고 있었다. 작은 정원을 감싸는 담장은 외부 벽면과 함께 간결하고 담백한 형태와 컬러로 정리해 주변 골목과 대비되어 집이 도드라져 보이도록 했다. 더불어 출입구의 천장을 덮는 금속이 담장을 따라 얇게 연결되도록 해 기와지붕과 담장의 경계를 날렵하게 정리해 주변과 대비되는 인상을 갖도록 했다.

Situated within the compact maze of residential alleys in Mia-dong, the 'normal house' is surrounded by a confluence of tightly juxtaposed, aged buildings. These homes coexist in a unique harmony, devoid of clear demarcations, while sharing roofs and passages, all under a canopy of tilted power poles and dangling electric lines. The modest garden is enclosed by a wall whose design and color scheme synergize with the external façade of the house, offering a stark visual contrast to the surrounding labyrinth of alleyways. Moreover, the slender metallic covering of the entrance roof extends along the perimeter wall, offering a clear delineation between the tiled roof and the wall, thereby enhancing the house's distinct character within its neighborhood context.

담장을 넘어 내부로 들어오면, 두 평이 채 되지 않는 작은 마당이 있었다. 좁은 골목으로 채광이 넉넉히 확보되지 않았지만, 마당과 마당을 바라보는 창으로는 햇빛이 충분히 들 수 있는 정도였다. 초기 현장에는 마당 면적의 절반 정도를 차지하는 곳에 판넬로 창고가 구획되어 있었는데, 이는 수납량 확보를 위해 구획된 공간이었다. 집으로 드는 햇빛을 절반 이상으로 줄이게 될 창고는 수납량이 줄어들더라도 변경되어야 하는 부분이라 생각했다. 대신 그 위치에 담장보다 높은 나무를 두어 햇빛을 받고 자연과 함께할 수 있는 정원을 확보했다. 주택에서만 누릴 수 있는 작은 마당 덕에 부부는 많은 화분을 관리하는 ‘식집사’로서의 새로운 라이프 스타일이 만들어졌다.

Transgressing the wall into the inner confines reveals a petite yard, scarcely two pyeong in the area. While the slender alleyway restricts abundant natural light, the presence of the yard and its overlooking windows allow for sufficient sun penetration. Initially, a panel-constructed storage space consumed nearly half of the yard area, a concession to optimize storage capacity. However, recognizing the inevitable sunlight reduction this would entail, we considered it essential to revise this aspect, even if it meant compromising storage space. Hence, we introduced a tree higher than the wall in the same spot, ensuring a verdant pocket bathed in sunlight, establishing an intimate connection with nature. Thanks to this unique little yard, the couple found themselves embracing a new lifestyle as 'plant butlers', tending to a myriad of potted plants.

내부 설계에서 가장 주요한 포인트는 넓은 주방과 다이닝 공간이었다. 요리를 좋아하는 남편 덕에 배달음식은 전혀 먹지 않는 부부였다. 또 지인들을 초대하는 빈도가 높아 넓은 다이닝 공간이 필요했다. 거실의 가장 긴 벽면 전체를 주방 공간으로 구획하고 그 앞에는 긴 다이닝 공간을 두어, 요리를 함께 준비하고 식사를 즐기는 부부의 일상을 가장 비중 있게 구획했다. 또한 길고 넓은 주방 공간은 쾌적한 조리 환경을 제공할 뿐만 아니라 많은 수납량을 확보할 수 있었다.

As for the interior design, a wide kitchen and dining area emerged as the key focus. Given the husband's culinary inclinations, the couple steered clear of delivery food. Their sociable nature, which often led to hosting gatherings, warranted a substantial dining space. We allocated the most extended wall of the living room for the kitchen and positioned a commodious dining area before it. This arrangement prioritized the couple's shared routines of meal preparation and dining, embracing their everyday life in a meaningful way. Additionally, this elongated and spacious kitchen offered not only an inviting cooking environment but also delivered substantial storage capabilities.
