협소한 대지를 계획할 때에는 땅과 주변 환경에 대한 분석 그리고 사용자의 요구를 구체화하고 이를 직조하는 치밀함이 그 어느 때보다도 필요하다. 협소한 땅은 면적, 형태, 출입구의 위치, 계단의 배치 등 땅의 여건상 건축물의 형태가 이미 규정되는 경우가 많아 고유한 이미지를 만들기 어려워 보이지만 외려 이러한 제약사항을 다른 시선으로 해석해 고유한 스토리를 만들어내는 것은 협소주택만의 매력이 되곤 한다.

좁은 골목 끝 18평이 채 되지 않는 삼각형의 땅. 삼각의 두 면이 뒷 건물로 올라가는 높은 계단과 맞붙어 있었는데, 뒤땅의 대지와 높이 차이가 커서 높은 땅을 등지고 있는 형태였다. 남향으로는 이러한 높은 땅이 있어 빛이 드는 것을 기대하기 어렵고, 도로 쪽으로는 이웃집의 창과 마주 볼 수밖에 없어 창을 냈을 때의 이점을 기대하기 힘들어 보였다. 더구나 해당 부지로 진입하는 도로는 차량 한 대가 겨우 진입할 정도의 좁은 도로라 공사 시 공사차량 진입 등 어려움이 많을 것으로 보였다.

건축주는 쉽사리 건축을 마음먹기 어려운 이형의 땅의 독특함에 이끌린 듯했다. 다각형의 공간에서 만들어지는 비정형적 공간감, 표준보다 작은 공간에서 느껴지는 아늑함, 사다리 같은 계단을 타고 올라가야만 갈 수 있는 숨은 공간 등 건축주와의 대화 후 우리가 느낀 것은 마치 어린 시절 책상 밑 아지트 같은 공간에서의 독립적이고 자율적인 활동과 쉼을 할 수 있는 공간을 꿈꾸는 듯했다. 빛을 들이는 창보다는 혼자만의 프라이버시를 지키고 나만의 시간에 집중할 수 있는 닫힌 공간을 그리고자 했다. 음악, 미술 등 다양한 행위와 형태로 감정을 표현하고 창작하는 건축주의 작업공간이 될 이곳을 우리는 그를 지켜줄 요새와도 같은 공간으로 만들고자 했다.

When planning a small-scale building, a precise understanding of the land, its surroundings, and the user’s needs is more crucial than ever. On a compact site, the form of the building is often predetermined by constraints such as the lot’s size, shape, entry points, and stair placement. Though these limitations can make it difficult to create a distinctive image, interpreting them through a different lens can yield a unique story — a quality that often defines the charm of small houses.

At the end of a narrow alley sat a triangular plot of less than 60 square meters. Two sides of the triangle faced tall exterior stairs leading to the upper neighboring land, forming a condition where the site leaned against higher ground. Because of this topography, sunlight from the south was blocked, and any window facing the street would inevitably confront a neighbor’s view, limiting opportunities for openness. Moreover, the road accessing the site was only wide enough for a single vehicle, posing significant challenges during construction.

The client seemed captivated by the very peculiarity that made the site difficult — the irregular geometry, the sense of intimacy that arises in smaller-than-standard spaces, and the hidden corners accessible only by ladder-like stairs. In our conversations, we sensed a longing for a space that offered solitude and creative freedom — much like a secret childhood hideout under the desk. Rather than inviting light, the client sought a closed, private space to focus inward — a personal fortress for creation and expression in music and art.
